Is a certification needed for ID?

I’m curious about the communities thoughts about a specialize certification being necessary to become an ID. Do you think it would make a difference? Has anyone ever asked for it during a interview? Do you think its something this specialized career needs? Or do you think a portfolio speaks loud enough to get you noticed and hired?
